This research topic includes a variety of topics from the very general approach to risk-informed decision-making, mainly in the petroleum industry, and mainly related to major hazard risk. This includes the use of risk tolerance criteria as well as ALARP, uncertainties and sensitivity studies, as well as the use of and provisions for cost benefit analysis.
Considerable focus has lately been on how to improve the decision-making in early (pre-FEED) project phases. Important improvement proposals were put forward in the Engen committee (2013) on the improvement of HES regulations in the petroleum industry.
Included in this topic is also use of risk assessment for planning of emergency preparedness, including standards for area based emergency preparedness. Use of environmental risk analysis for decision-making is also part of the topic, including decision-making in relation to acceptability of environmental risk.
