Costs and safety once more

Norwegian Oil and Gas published a report by Menon just hours before the annual RNNP report was published by PSA, the Menon report claiming (again) no correlation between cost reductions and safety. A number of colleagues at NTNU, SINTEF and Safetec published a chronicle just a few days later in Stavanger Aftenblad.

The Menon report is weak in its arguments, and some of the arguments are impossible to follow. A number of very essential issues are neglected completely. The most serious deficiency in the report is the apparent belief that if working environment and occupational safety is good, then the risk of major accidents is also low. It should not be possible to make this critical failure in the wake of Texas City and Macondo accidents, at least if you are professional advisor! You may read the full chronicle (in Norwegian) here.
